What Is Botox?
Botox is a widely recognized neuromodulator that temporarily reduces muscle activity in the injected areas. It is a purified protein taken from a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum, and it blocks nerve signals in the injected muscles. This reduction in muscle activity smoothes out wrinkles and fine lines.
How Does Botox Work?
During a Botox treatment, we will inject small doses of the neuromodulator into specific muscles on your face. The medication stops your body from releasing acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes muscle contractions, in the area. By interrupting these signals locally, the muscles that cause dynamic lines on the face are able to relax. These effects last for several months before muscle activity gradually returns to normal.
What Are the Uses of Botox?
- Crow’s Feet: Those fine lines radiating from the corners of your eyes, often called crow’s feet, can be softened with Botox. This treatment specifically targets the muscles that cause these lines when you smile or squint.
- Forehead Lines: Horizontal lines that form across your forehead are common with aging. Botox injections relax the forehead muscles, smoothing out these lines.
- Frown Lines: The vertical lines between your eyebrows, known as frown lines, can make you look angry or tired. Injectables help by relaxing the underlying muscles, reducing the severity of these lines and giving you a softer look.
- Neck Bands: As we age, vertical neck bands can become more pronounced. A botulinum toxin treatment targets muscles to smooth the appearance of the neck and reduce the visibility of these bands.
- Lip Flip: For those looking to enhance their smile, the Botox lip flip is a subtle option. Rather than adding volume like a filler, this treatment relaxes the muscles around the upper lip, allowing the lip to flip slightly outward and appear fuller.
- Chin Wrinkles: Wrinkles and dimples in the chin area can be addressed with Botox. If you have noticed an orange peel texture on your chin or other lines, Botox can be injected to keep your chin even and polished.
Why Choose Botox?
Quick, Non-Invasive Treatments
With Botox treatments, you don’t have to take much time away from your busy day. Treatments only take between 10 and 15 minutes. Because it is non-surgical, you also don’t have to worry about anesthesia, incisions, or any of the other components that come with more invasive skin tightening procedures.
No Long Recovery Times
With Botox, there is no lengthy recovery period or downtime. Simply come in for your treatment and then get back to your daily routine. Botox is convenient for patients who just want a lunchtime treatment that won’t disrupt their day.
Temporary and Adjustable
Botulinum toxin treatments are temporary which is perfect for those who are trying new anti-aging treatments and don’t want to commit to anything permanent. If you are new to cosmetic treatments, you can try it and see how you like the results, knowing that adjustments can be made with future treatments. This flexibility allows you to find the perfect look for you.

What to Expect From Your Botox Treatment
Before Botox Injections
Before your Botox injections, you will have a consultation with us. This often takes place on the same day as your first injections. During your consultation, we will discuss your medical history along with your previous cosmetic treatment experiences. We recommend stopping certain blood-thinning medications and supplements like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and grapeseed oil before the treatment to minimize any bruising after the treatment. You should come to your appointment with a face that is clean and free of makeup or other products.
During Botox Injections
Botox injections start with an examination of your facial features with special attention on muscle movements and the appearance of wrinkles. We will take “before” pictures at this stage, asking you to make certain expressions to emphasize the dynamic wrinkles. Next, we take a syringe with a very small needle and inject Botox into several points along the targeted muscle. We will guide you through the process, give you instructions for after your injections, and answer any questions you might have.
Injections can be a little uncomfortable and usually feel like a slight pinch. While this discomfort is brief and tolerable for most people, some patients request the use of comfort measures such as topical numbing cream. You can discuss these options with us at the time of your appointment.
After Botox Injections
Right after your Botox injections, you will not notice any changes to your wrinkles. You may have some redness and a little swelling in the areas where you received your injections, but most people find that they are able to return to work or other activities right away.
We recommend that you stay upright for at least four hours after your injections to prevent the medication from migrating to other areas. You should also stay away from extreme temperatures such as saunas and hot tubs, and keep your skin out of the direct sunlight to promote healing. You should not schedule a head or facial massage for at least 24 hours after your Botox treatments and avoid rubbing or scratching your face.
Follow-Up Treatments
After Botox is injected and takes effect, your body will slowly begin to metabolize the botulinum toxin molecules. Over time, this reduces the active concentration of Botox in the intended area. Your body will also begin to restore nerve endings that were affected by Botox. As the blocked nerve terminals sprout new branches, they regain the ability to produce and release acetylcholine. Eventually, this leads to a noticeable return of motion and an increased appearance of wrinkles. While this takes several months, you will need to schedule additional appointments to keep the smooth and youthful results you have been enjoying.
